The Annual Sculling Race for Doggett’s Coat and Badge – Thomas Rowlandson (1805-1810)

This Saturday 16th July, at The Assembly Rooms, Charlton Village, at 2.30 pm we’ll be learning about Thomas Doggett, a man who lived in the eighteenth century but has passed into London’s history as the founder of the annual Doggett’s Coat and Badge sculling race.

Doggett settled in Eltham after making his fortune as the greatest comedian of his age – a plaque commemorating him can still be seen in Eltham cemetery.  Margaret Taylor, former chair of the Eltham Society and current trustee of the Greenwich Talking Newspaper, will be telling us more about his life and times and how he came to found the race which still bears his name.  We hope to see you there!
